PROJECT 3 - VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE
The interpretive centre will serve two purposes: 1.To provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture/history/memory/essence of the site 2. To provide accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information. Solutions relying heavily on landscape are encouraged. Visitors should be inspired and informed in ways that somehow express the spirit of the place (genius loci).
In the final project for Design Studio 3, I designed a visitor interpretive centre (VIC) in Bukit CIna, Malacca. An introduction an analysis of the site could be found in Project 2, and this project is pretty much a continuation of Project 2. It picks up where Project 2 lefts off, with the end result being a fully functional VIC.
The VIC's programme is heavily inspired and designed in response to the site's specific needs. The community of Bukit Cina, composing of crafts and tradesmen, have been doing their craft for generations. In fact, many of them are the descendents of those who currently lie buried on Bukit Cina hill, and are proud of their shared history and legacy. However, many sadly shared that they are likely the last of their businesses, as their sons and daughters do not share any interest in continuing. Thus, the VIC aims to allow the community a chance to spread their knowledge to a wider audience, to figuratively pass on the torch, before the flame is snuffed out forever.

The presentation board shown above is composed of 4 A1 sized boards, the demonstrates the design concept, design execution and site analysis. Also present are all renderings, drawings, etc. of the VIC design.
