PROJECT 1A - PREDESIGN ANALYSIS

Students are required to conduct and present the following pre-design analysis:
1. Studies of the contextual conditions of your site
2. Studies on your selected user group and building types
3. Studies on the cultural and meaning place.
4. Studies on the current restrictions and proposed development on site and how it will affect the project and design.
5. Studies on precedents that inform the ideas/approach/strategies that can be used in developing project and programme.

Based on the pre-design phase, develop a simple, brief and yet comprehensive presentation. Presentation can be in a form of video, slide and others that can capture people, place and time on the given site.

Our final design project is set in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur. As our programme is dependent on our specific micro site, we first have to conduct an in-depth site analysis. Thus, in our own tutorial group, we produced a powerpoint presentation with a focus on the "Ownership" of the site. The following is the analysis.

PROJECT 1B - DESIGN STRATEGY PROPOSAL

- Able to formulate a simple brief that include appropriate architectural programme and planning within a selected architectural context

- Able to analyse case studies to gain understanding of architectural responses and strategies of an intentional design strategy to inform the design project

- Learned to conduct contextual and user analysis in the pre-design phase

- Able to produce a formal architectural design strategy that response to the proposed brief

In this stage, I proceeded onwards to creating a very preliminary schematic design. It is here where I first set the programme for the Food Theatre. There is still design analysis to be done specific to our own sites and programmes. This proposal is done very quickly, as the purpose of it is to ascertain one's design position and trajectory.

PROJECT 1C - THE FOOD THEATRE //

CULINARY PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE

- Able to produce design development drawings for a selected portion of design with a suitable level of complexity

- Able to design with considerations of building performance (thermal comfort, acoustic and lighting), regulatory frameworks, and health and safety considerations

- Able to produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling, verbal presentation and a design report to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas

My final design is the Food Theatre, or the Culinary Performing Arts Centre. This proposal is derived from a phenomenon seen throughout Malaysia and particularly in Taisk Titiwangsa. There is a change in the hierarchy of the dining experience. Traditionally, the Malaysian dining experience consist of the product and the service, with the product holding a far greater weight than the service. However, lately, this status quo has started to change. With the introduction of food trucks and hipster cafes (especially throughout Titiwangsa), we can extrapolate and predict that in the near future, this weightage of product and service will deviate and ultimately, converge into a singularity.

When this happens, we will experience a paradigm shift in Malaysian food culture. When the very act of preparation, serving and eating becomes just as important as the food, the relationship of the chef and the patron changes into one akin to a performer and audience Thus: a food theatre.
