Building material is any material which is used for a construction purpose. This project is designed as an introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. Students are required to construct their choice of shapes using the listed materials to explore and understand building making in relation to the materials, design considerations of material according to their properties and to finally understand how to intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material factor in a design process.

The first project in this module involves us creating a 30x30x30cm object using an assortment of three different materials. There is an emphasis on the relationship and play of solids and voids, and consequently, light and shadows. The object was to be constructed up of variations of only one basic form (which in my case, a cuboid), and not to exceed the set dimensions.

The design approach used was to first select a keyword, and then develop the design from there. The keyword "constrained" was used, and the design of the object expresses the definition of the word. A random mass of chaos being constrained by an order of solid frames.
