PROJECT 2B - RETREAT HOUSE
The Ice breaking design project introduces basic understanding of the design processes and approaches in generating ideas, formulating conceptual narratives, developing design and translating it into form design. The purpose of the project is for students to unravel their creative side and inner self through various mode of communication or art form.
This is the final project for Semester 2. Effectively, it is a continuation from Project 2A: we already know how to do site analysis, the only thing left is to go bigger. This is an individual project, and we are each given a "client" that are just two words: [adjective] + [noun]. With the client, we are then to design a retreat house for that person, taking into account both the needs of the client and of the site. With that, we set to work.
I was given the "jolly writer" as my client, and, as I am already well acquainted and perfectly happy with my current site, decided not to change. The retreat house is around 150 square metres, and is a single story building of concrete, glass and wooden construction. Although it features the standard rooms that all houses must have, it has several unique characteristics that make it unique to the client and to the site.
The concept of my design is "to invoke and amplify the child-like imagination of the jolly writer." Thus, the building is purposely designed to do just that by emphasizing contrast from a variety of sources as well as to control sensory input.
The final result were: one final model, two A1 boards featuring site analysis, diagrammatic explanations and drawings, and plenty of sketches and a massive quantity of study models.
